Body Check-in

Sorry for the slow posting lately! I've been thinking about you all so much, but I have actually been under the weather:( You know those times when you mentally feel energized, motivated and pumped-up but you physically drag and are in pain? Well, that's been me for the past few days and I don't like it!

I want everyone to check in with their body with me--just for a minute. We often move through life, daily accomplishing our goals, but neglecting our physical health and this short exercise will help you to "check-in" and "re-center" yourself to fully allow yourself to be well.

Let's Check-In
  • Put one hand on your heart and the other on a part of your body that has been ailing you. This could be a physical part or an emotional part. For example, my head has been giving me pain, so I will put one hand on my heart and the other on my head. But if I was having anxiety or perhaps sadness, I would put my hand on the part of my body where I am "experiencing" those emotions. I generally experience sadness in my chest, so one hand could go on my heart and the other, close on my chest.
  • Now, with your eyes closed, breathe in deeply, focus on your hands and allow whatever is ailing you to slowly leave your body with your breath out.
  • Repeat.
  • Keep repeating until you feel centered and your pain is eased. You can meditate on this pain, pray, simply focus or do whatever you need to release the pain.

Doing this exercise helps remind me that when I am hurting or sick or I'm in pain, that I need to take the time to listen to my body and take care of it.

I conducted this exercise at a church once and something surprising happened: after I finished the segment, a man came up to me and told me that he had been in one of the wars and constantly struggled with haunting visions in his head from the experience. He said that during the exercise as he put his hand on his heart and then over his eye/head, for the few moments he focused on his breathing and his pain, the visions vanished. There is true power in how our minds and bodies are not only connected, but are one being. Try to remember this when you are in pain and I hope that you find some peace through this exercise.
