Playing is not just for the kiddos anymore! Play is, or SHOULD be, part of our daily lives. Just as we work, we must also play. Our play balances our soul to give our best in our work, with our family and friends, and to the world.
When I first learned of the concept of play as an adult, I thought it meant doing things as we would have as children. Yes, this is one of the ways we can play. For me, this means coloring. I LOVED to color as a kid and I still LOVE to color now. I don't do it often enough. Coloring is actually a form of meditation for me now. I concentrate on keeping the color within the lines and watch the medium flow onto the page. It is soothing.
Yes, that is a Barbie coloring book. I found it at the thrift store and I love it! Barbie is my old pal from growing up. I also enjoy coloring in pattern books like the one above.
Doing things we loved as children can be therapeutic for our hearts and souls. But we can play in other ways too. Play will mean different things to different people. Anything that energizes your heart can be considered PLAY.
Here is a list of things I can think of:
Reading a book on the front porch
Playing with my puppy
Playing card games with friends
Painting
Gardening
Garage Sale-ing with my husband
Taking a walk in a park
Dancing...anywhere
Having coffee with a dear friend
Video chatting with friends across the country
Having a craft night with girlfriends
Going to the library and reading humorous books
Baking (especially cupcakes)
A lot of my clients talk about needing more work/life balance. Well, PLAY is one of the easiest ways to get started with this way of living!
Have you played today? Is play a priority? If not, try it out today or tomorrow. Schedule some time in if you have to. Your heart will thank you. If you are struggling to find "play" in your life or need to figure out what "play" means for you, life coaching can help!
